SmartDrive

The Verdict

AccessYourLife | December 11, 2025 | Wheelchair Attachment
Photo of a person, with brown curly hair, using a self-propelling wheelchair on a countryside path. A large backpack is hung on the back of the wheelchair, below which a 'SmartDrive' power assist unit connected to the rear of the wheelchair can be seen. In the background a wire fence, fencing off a field in which a number of sheep, can be seen.

Attachment Description:
Black power assist that attaches with a clamp to the axle bar of a fixed frame wheelchair. A Bluetooth wristband activates and deactivates the power assist function by tapping the wheel.

Battery Life:
Up to 8-10 miles on reasonably flat ground.

Source Of Attachment:
Albion Mobility

Diagnosis:
Not Disclosed

Personal Opinion:
The SmartDrive hooks onto its own clamp, which is fixed to the axle bar of my TiLite wheelchair. It took me a while to master attaching and detaching it while sitting in my chair, but I am now able to self-propel on carpets, up inclines, or over anything.

The SmartDrive gives me the freedom to go almost anywhere, and I have used it to fundraise for the Brittle Bone Society (who funded this attachment and my TiLite wheelchair) by completing 50 sponsored walks of varying distances.

It is best used on smoother surfaces, but can just about handle dry grass and slightly stony paths. My SmartDrive has changed my life by giving me the freedom to enjoy many things I had to give up, including seemingly simple things, like meeting friends, shopping, enjoying the fresh air, and much more.
