Hey there 👋

I'm Lauren

Fun Fact: Disney & Dog Obsessed

I am a Founder and Director of Access Your Life.

I was diagnosed with several disabilities at the age of 19. While I previously had a passion for teaching dance, I’ve since developed a deep appreciation for sharing my experiences. My hope is that by doing so, others living with disabilities can learn to make the most of each day with the help of the right equipment, whether that involves resting in bed or planning a trip to Disneyland!

Get to know me

My health significantly declined a decade ago, leading to frequent hospital visits, reliance on mobility aids, full-time care, and persistent pain. During this time, I faced disbelief from medical professionals, which caused considerable anxiety regarding hospital appointments, ward admissions, and using community services.

I was unaware that the NHS often provides clinically unsuitable equipment until I received an ill-fitting and uncomfortable Invacare Action 3 wheelchair with transit wheels and a broken footplate. I disliked using it so much that I eventually stopped leaving the house. However, after much persuasion from my partner, Felix, I agreed to order a bespoke wheelchair, on the sole condition that it was pink.

To my surprise, buying my first bespoke wheelchair was a process similar to buying a car. I initially struggled to identify suitable features, which resulted in wasted time and money. Fortunately, I now have a custom wheelchair that perfectly meets my needs, significantly enhancing my quality of life and encouraging new experiences. This equipment keeps me comfortable, safe, and independent, whether we are at a disability event, a hospital appointment, or Disneyland.

However, the mobility equipment industry is constantly evolving and often features ableist sales pitches, making it challenging for users to navigate. This challenge led Felix and me to establish Access Your Life and help others find the right equipment to enable them to achieve a brighter future.

We couldn’t do this important work without my assistance dog, Fliss. Not only has she given me the confidence to leave the house on my good days and a reason to feel happy again, but she also provided us both with a supportive and comforting presence on the more challenging days.
