RGK FrontWheel

The Verdict

A chunky wheel that attaches to the front of the wheelchair to allow it to go over uneven or rough ground. Similar to the FreeWheel, but shorter and wider. The wheel can be lifted up to allow normal wheeling or clicked down into place, lifting up the front castor wheels.

I have tried both the FreeWheel and this FrontWheel. The FrontWheel is less portable, as it cannot be clipped to the back of the chair when not in use, and isn’t foldable, which makes it quite cumbersome. However, it fits very well onto chairs with the fitting points attached and feels much more like an extension of the chair rather than a flimsy clip-on.

I like that it sticks out much less than the FreeWheel, allowing it to be used both indoors and outdoors without needing to be removed. It makes surfaces like cobbles, stones, and grass a lot easier to wheel over. When you get to smooth paths or want to go indoors, you can lift the wheel and lock it in place so that it remains attached, but your castors are on the ground.

I love that it feels very stable and isn’t bouncy, unlike the FreeWheel. I also found it much easier to roll in a straight line, while the FreeWheel had a tendency to veer off to one side, especially on cambered paths.

It can be a little fiddly to attach or remove, but it gets easier the more you use it.

I got my FrontWheel for free when I bought my RGK Tiga FX directly from RGK. It was a great deal.
