Dassie 200

The Verdict

Black rigid frame with folding/removable footplates, removable armrests, and a folding “racer” style back rest.

The Dassie 200 is designed specifically for off-road terrain but is also compact enough for use in most shops, etc. I purchased the chair from A4W, but it is manufactured by Radical Mobility.

The chair I purchased was discounted because it is an ex-demo (A4W no longer stocks Radical products). Upon purchase, it was agreed that they would install their standard folding backrest and lights, supply a bag and a cup holder, and change the batteries from Lead Acid to Lithium Ion for me. However, they were consistently late or didn’t turn up at all, both with little to no warning.

When the chair finally arrived, it had a different folding back, no lights, no cup holder, and no bag. The footplates were uneven, and the central pole had to be sawn down. I also needed a new joystick, but the chair had to be taken to the joystick manufacturer’s warehouse to have this fitted. I was repeatedly fobbed off!

When they finally arrived to install the lights, it was clear they were the wrong type and not compatible, only to later discover that the lights supplied were entirely inappropriate for the usage (LED strips with no weather protection, all joins done improperly), and when inspecting them, my Dad received a small electric shock. Fortunately, we have a friend who is very handy with all things electrical, and he was able to resolve these issues. To install the new lights, we had to remove the seat base to gain access to the control box. Upon doing so, we accessed the batteries and found that they had not been fitted with lithium batteries as promised; in fact, the batteries weren’t even new.

I repeatedly tried to get in touch with A4W to resolve these issues without no luck until I reported them to trading standards and threatened legal action. They eventually refunded me the costs quoted for the lights and lithium batteries (nearly £1000).

For a while, I had been having issues with one of my front wheels not touching the ground at times. I took the chair apart earlier this year to repaint it and discovered that the frame itself is warped and uneven. We attempted to adjust the motors to allow the wheels to sit evenly, but due to the shape of the brackets, this proved impossible. As such, I have to live with this. Occasionally, I get stuck going over bumps, and my chair can’t cope with cambers on paths, which causes it to slide sideways.
