I have recently gone through the full process of purchasing a customised power chair through Access Your Life, and the experience was unlike any other I have had before. Previously, I owned a folding power chair, two mobility scooters, and even a Hoverboard Go Kart, as they were the most affordable solutions among failing equipment! They’ve come with dangerous breakdowns, muscular problems, and fatigue when handling. When my most recent chair died, I found AYL and sent a general enquiry. From that point on, I’ve felt like I’ve been gathered in a nurturing, practical hug, where I am fully seen as a vibrant individual in my mid-30s with needs and dreams. Lauren and Felix were on a mission to get the right setup for me. I had full confidence that they secured the best price for each individual component and quickly learnt that they are passionate and vocal about putting the clients first at every stage and in every way.
We had several thorough discussions, measurements, and specification lists, which I believe are much more comprehensive than any experience with a non-disabled sales team. Delivery day was a complete joy: they proudly revealed my new ‘throne’ with a huge bow and a flourish of cloth and spent hours calibrating it. When there was a problem, they dealt with the manufacturer and ensured I had loan wheels, so I wasn’t stranded. Their aftercare is just as thorough, with a one-month service at my home and an annual follow-up thereafter. Each time, they have spent hours and shown dedicated perfectionism. The experience has changed how I feel about my illness after 20 years.
Each mobility aid in that time has shrivelled my soul in some way – be it the catalogues with absolutely no representation of young people or the dull, utilitarian designs. They have also prevented me from accessing the countryside I love and travelling easily. Now, I have something I genuinely think is stylish, and I can drive with pride and postural support through mud and galleries. AYL deserve this award.
