Invictus Active Trainer Trial

If you follow Access Your Life’s social media channels, you may have seen that I’ve recently been trialling the Invictus Active Trainer to maintain my fitness levels as lockdown restrictions begin to ease in the UK. I’ll be sharing my honest thoughts and opinions throughout this post, but if you’d like more detail on product specs, you can also check out my complete review.

What Is It?

The Invictus Active Trainer is essentially a treadmill for wheelchair users! Your wheelchair sits on four rollers, and without going anywhere, your arms do all the work. It’s ideal for most wheelchair users looking for a way to stay fit from the comfort of their own home. Before this trial, my cardio routine was limited to outdoor pushes in the park—but with unpredictable weather and my ongoing caution around gyms, this gave me the perfect solution to stay active indoors.

Delivery & Setup

The trainer arrived at my parents’ house a couple of days after dispatch. The packaging was large but very secure—no damage to the box or its contents. The unit itself is heavier than I expected. I’m usually quite independent, but I did need to ask my dad to help lift, unpack, and assemble the trainer. So, if you’re considering one for yourself, I’d recommend having someone available to assist. Assembly took around 45 minutes, and the online instructions were really clear and easy to follow.

Tracking Progress

You can also purchase several add-ons to help track your speed, distance, and heart rate. I particularly loved the distance monitor—it gave me a rough idea of how far I’d pushed, similar to my park route. I was really impressed with the additional tracking services, which were super easy to set up and monitor using the Invictus Active app on my phone. Everything syncs seamlessly and can be displayed on their handy phone stand.

From Training to Tangible Results

As an athlete, I’m always curious about my heart rate and progress during training. The images below show the difference between two of my sessions, taken two months apart. I reached my 20-mile target much faster the second time. Of course, there are other contributing factors, like increased training with the GB team and more cardio in my schedule—but I truly believe the Invictus Active Trainer has helped me get fitter, faster.

Final Thoughts

In my opinion, the Invictus Active Trainer is a brilliant piece of kit for anyone looking to stay fit without leaving home—something many of us may be prioritising again with the prospect of another lockdown looming. The only downside is the price, especially if you want the extra features like the heart rate and distance monitors. But even with that in mind, I honestly think it’s 100% worth the investment. There aren’t many pieces of accessible home gym equipment on the market, and this is easily one of the best.
