Personal Opinion:
I have lost count of the number of wheelchair blankets I have bought over the years, yet I’ve never found a product that encompasses my preferences so perfectly. For example:
– keeping the front and back of my legs warm;
– can be used all year round;
– quick and easy to put on / take off;
– doesn’t get caught in my wheels;
– requires little strength and dexterity to use;
– can be machine washed without impacting the quality of the product;
– is small enough to fit into my backpack when not in use.
Specification:
I initially discovered NiCosy Wheelchair Blankets at Naidex where my measurements, colour preference and payment were taken, before receiving my custom made wheelchair blanket in the post a few weeks later! Standard-sized blankets are also available, both of which are available in over 70 colours and patterns. Something I really appreciate as most disability-related products only ever come in black or beige.
Each blanket is made with a single sheet of hand-cut polar fleece fabric with two large pockets on the sides, providing users with the perfect amount of comfort all year round. You can also fit the blanket underneath an additional wheelchair cosy if needed, although you can now opt for a waterproof version in matching colours and designs, preventing you from having to purchase multiples covers with different purposes.
Packaging & Delivery:
Whether you buy online or at a disability exhibition the packaging is biodegradable! Each blanket is also made in Britain, preventing emissions associated with manufacturing and shipping products from abroad.
Installation:
Aside from the endless colour options, the main reason I bought this blanket was because of how easy it is to get in and out of, even with limited dexterity. You don’t have to worry about it slipping down or become trapped in your wheels, as the blanket fastens to the back of your chair with a strong buckle and secures around your legs with snag-free velcro. The sleek design doesn’t restrict leg movement, which is particularly useful for anyone like me who suffers from muscle spasms and poor circulation. Each blanket also comes with an extension strap, allowing you to secure your NiCosy to other pieces of equipment or furniture you may use.
Using The Item:
In addition to leaving my blanket on my wheelchair almost all year round, I have been known to use it in the car, on an aeroplane or during a hospital admission! Both sides of the blankets can be folded back to quickly administer medication, access catheter bags etc, whilst also discreetly covering this equipment when in use. The blanket is super easy to transport when not in use, so much so that it fits perfectly into my small backpack.
Conclusion:
I highly recommend this wheelchair accessory to anyone looking for an easy to use, extremely versatile and high-quality product. They last SUCH a last time and wash extremely well. But best of all, it can be used in conjunction with most manual wheelchairs, powerchairs, mobility scooters and many other regular seats!
